DNS Hosting
DNS (Domain Name Service) hosting is a very simple but critical component of today's Internet-enabled networks. If you own, or plan to own an Internet domain name (example: yourcompany.com), you will need to "host" the "records" for that domain on Domain Name Servers.
When someone across the world types www.yourcompany.com into their web browser, the browser needs to know where that web site is hosted and how to access it. Similarly, when someone sends an e-mail to
name@yourcompany.com, their e-mail provider somehow needs to know where to deliver that e-mail. This "DNS Records" provide this information.
It is very important to have a solid relationship with your DNS host, and that they be responsive to your requests for changes, otherwise e-mail can be lost or web sites can be inaccessible. Microsoft's 2-day web site outage in January 2001 was caused by incorrect DNS configuration.
